By staying at our villa in Bonnieux, you will find yourself at the perfect base for exploring all these gems of Provence.
1. Gordes — 15 minutes from the villa
Gordes consistently ranks among the most beautiful villages in France. Stone houses climb up a steep hillside, forming an incredible panorama best viewed from the lookout point on the approach road. Be sure to visit the 12th-century castle in the center, as well as the famous Senanque Abbey, situated in the valley just below — in summer it is surrounded by rows of blooming lavender. On Tuesdays, Gordes hosts one of the finest markets in Luberon.
2. Roussillon — 12 minutes from the villa
Roussillon is striking with its ochre facades, painted in shades ranging from golden to deep red. The village stands on the site of former ochre quarries, and a walk along the Sentier des Ocres trail is a journey through a Martian landscape right in the heart of Provence. Arrive early in the morning to catch the soft light, perfect for photography. In summer, the ochre trail stays open until late evening.
3. Bonnieux — your home in Provence
Bonnieux is the village where our villa is located, and it is no coincidence that we chose this very place. The old church at the hilltop, a cedar forest with a panoramic trail, the Friday market with local cheeses and olive oil — all of this makes Bonnieux one of the most authentic villages in Luberon. There are no crowds of tourists here, but there are superb restaurants and a bakery with the best croissants in the region.
4. Menerbes — 8 minutes from the villa
Menerbes was made famous by Peter Mayle in his books about Provence. The village stretches along a rocky ridge, offering breathtaking views of vineyards and lavender fields. Visit the House of Truffle and Wine, as well as the 13th-century citadel. Menerbes is one of the closest villages to our villa, and it is a pleasant walk on a warm evening.
5. Lacoste — 10 minutes from the villa
Lacoste is a village with a controversial history: here stand the ruins of the Marquis de Sade's castle, now partially restored by Pierre Cardin. Every summer, the castle hosts an arts festival. The narrow streets of Lacoste wind past galleries and artists' studios, and the view of neighboring Bonnieux from the castle terrace is one of the finest in Luberon.
6. Lourmarin — 20 minutes from the villa
Lourmarin is an elegant village on the other side of the Luberon, known for its Renaissance castle and literary history — Albert Camus is buried here. The Friday market in Lourmarin is a true celebration of Provencal cuisine. Numerous boutiques, cafes, and a Michelin-starred restaurant make this village ideal for a full day trip.
7. Oppede-le-Vieux — 12 minutes from the villa
If you are looking for the atmosphere of an abandoned medieval village, Oppede-le-Vieux is your choice. Partially deserted by its inhabitants in the 19th century, the village has preserved the ruins of a castle and a Romanesque church. Climbing the steep paths among ivy-covered walls rewards you with stunning views of the valley. This place is especially beautiful in spring, when the ruins are engulfed in flowers.
8. Saignon — 20 minutes from the villa
Saignon is a quiet village perched on a rocky cliff above the town of Apt. There are almost no tourists here, but there is an old fountain on the main square, a 12th-century Romanesque church, and fantastic views of the valley. Saignon is known for its pottery workshops and small art galleries. The perfect destination for those seeking authentic Provence without the crowds.
9. Ansouis — 30 minutes from the villa
Ansouis is a miniature village crowned by a castle that belonged to one family for eight centuries. A stroll along the steep streets past medieval facades leads to a church with unusual underground gardens. Ansouis is part of the association of the most beautiful villages in France and surprises visitors with its intimate atmosphere.
10. Cucuron — 25 minutes from the villa
Cucuron is famous for its old pond surrounded by plane trees — this is where a scene from the film "A Good Year" with Russell Crowe was shot. On Tuesdays, one of the most picturesque markets in Provence unfolds around the pond. The village has preserved its medieval charm with gate towers and a watchtower offering views across the entire Durance valley.
Practical tips
All the villages listed are within a 30-minute drive from our villa in Bonnieux, making it the ideal base for discovering Luberon. We recommend visiting two to three villages per day, leaving time for lunch at a local restaurant and a leisurely stroll.
- Best time to visit: early morning or late afternoon, when the light is particularly beautiful and there are fewer tourists
- Parking: most villages have free parking at the base, from which you need to walk uphill
- Markets: plan your route around local market days — this is the best way to experience the spirit of each village
- Footwear: village streets are cobblestoned and steep, so comfortable shoes are essential
